What's the appropriate width for a tie? Is it 0.8", 1.6", 2.4" or 3.15"?
While a tie's width was more important in the past, today personal tastes prevail over fashion trends.
Similarly to belts for men, ties went through a period when they got as narrow as 0.8". Since then, fashions have changed and today we wear them wider. The new "skinny tie" would be between 2" and 2 3/4".
So we've established that the width of a slim tie is dictated by what's considered fashionable. Another important thing to keep in mind is that these narrow ties are the same width all the way through, unlike classic ties that widen at the bottom.
