Sanctus | Gold-Tone St. Benedict Cross Wheat Chain Necklace

On the front of this order of Christ pendant, St. Benedict holds a cross in his right hand and his rule for monasteries in his left. A poisoned cup is situated to his right, a reference to a legend that hostile monks tried to poison him. To his left, the raven that carried off a loaf of poisoned bread. These stories are the origin of the belief that a medal featuring the effigy of St. Benedict can protect against poison.

The letters C S S M L – N D S M D are featured on the back of the cross – initials signifying “may the holy cross be my light – may the dragon never be my overlord.” The encircled C S P B means “The Cross of Holy Father Benedict.” Surrounding these are the letters V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B, which means “Begone Satan. Never tempt me with your vanities. What you offer me is evil. Drink the poison yourself!” At the top, the word ‘PAX’ stands for “peace.”
