The secret to styling the pattern tie is to not use too many colours – and not too few either. The pattern tie will take up too much space in your over-all look, if it is worn with only black, and it will "drown" in the outfit if it is worn with too many different shades and colours. It is in the balance between the two poles.

Basically, you can wear any kind of solid coloured shirt to a pattern tie, as long as the colour of the shirt matches those of the tie. But you should never wear the pattern tie with a pattern shirt, no matter how well the colours go together, unless you are willing to take a risk.
